One clean month is not a stable pattern either. A quiet support month, one large prepaid deal, or a stretch where the founder handled everything personally can make margins look better than they really are. Investors want a trend across several months.

A stronger answer sounds like this: "Our software gross margin is 82%. Paid onboarding sits outside that number. Founder support averaged six hours per new customer, and that number has fallen for four straight months." That answer holds up much better in technical due diligence.

## A short checklist before the investor meeting

Most investor answers fall apart when the numbers sound clean but the work behind them is fuzzy. You should be able to connect revenue, delivery work, support effort, and product changes in one clear story.

A good answer is short first and detailed second. Start with one gross margin number you trust, then keep one backup view ready in case the investor asks what sits inside it.

Before the meeting, check a few things:

- Practice a two-minute version of the margin story.
- Review support load by customer segment. A small group of customers often creates most tickets and urgent fixes.
- Pull rework data from recent releases.
- Mark every manual step in delivery, including custom setup, data imports, manual QA, and founder-led onboarding.
- Keep one simple number for the room and one backup table for due diligence.

After that, decide which fixes raise margin next. In many startups, the fastest gains come from removing special cases, tightening onboarding, cutting avoidable support, and making delivery repeatable instead of aspirational. If the stack costs too much for the current revenue level, say how you will right-size it. If support eats time, show what product or process change reduces that load.
